Kristel Laur and Toomas Järvet are the founders of the Juhan Kuus Fond NPO – the organization dedicated to preserving and introducing Juhan Kuus's creative legacy. They co-run the Juhan Kuus Documentary Photo Centre in Tallinn, the public part of the foundation, which focuses on the development of documentary photography in Estonia and the showcasing of Estonian documentary photos worldwide.
Toomas discovered Juhan Kuus and his Estonian origins 20 years ago. Still, it was not until 2016 that Juhan's first ever photo exhibition was presented in his fatherland, organized jointly with The Art Museum of Estonia, and curated by Kristel Laur, Toomas Järvet, and Kersti Koll. During the preparations for the exhibition, Kristel and Toomas organized a meeting with the photographer in 2014 in Paris at the Sipa Press, subsequently undertaking 10 days of research at the archives. Alongside extensive correspondence with Juhan, this experience was an opportunity for the curators to get to know the author and the stories behind the photographs. After Juhan's unexpected and tragic death in 2015, they traveled to South Africa, searching for the origins of his work and meeting with many of his colleagues, friends, family, and opponents.
During the exhibition tour, they not only talk about images on the walls but tell unique stories, debunk myths and clarify misconceptions behind the rogue yet truly humanist photographer Juhan Kuus.
