Benedetta Ristori’s series The Wall Remembers Twice takes the viewer through spaces where history is not a closed chapter of the past, but a part of everyday life. Central to Ristori’s photographic practice is the examination of places in which individual life paths, the built environment, and collective memory are closely intertwined. Her images capture the changing landscapes of Central and Eastern Europe while exploring how ideology, politics, and history leave their mark on contemporary visual reality.

The series presented in the exhibition is closely connected to Ristori’s previous works, particularly East, a long-term project produced in the Balkan Peninsula. While East focused on the post-socialist identity of the former Yugoslav region, The Wall Remembers Twice extends this conceptual journey by focusing on the spaces of Georgia and Armenia. Ristori does not limit her attention to spectacular historical monuments; instead, she also photographs everyday locations—housing estates, swimming pools, gas stations, playgrounds—that remain in active use today. These spaces simultaneously bear the ideological imprint of the past and the traces of contemporary life: the walls, surfaces and structures thus “remember twice”–reflecting both collective history and individual experience.

A prominent role in the series is given to the monumental memorials of the socialist era, the Spomeniks, which Ristori approaches not merely as historical relics but as abstract, totem-like forms. Her photographs reveal how these monuments have become ambivalent carriers of collective memory: they recall the fall of an ideology while also preserving the traces of a community’s past. In Ristori’s photographs, taken in different seasons, empty spaces and occasional human presence create a bridge between past and present. Drawing on documentary traditions while remaining reflective and open-ended, Ristori’s visual language thus does not seek to close the question of memory, but rather to open it up.

The selection of 21 photographs on view at the PaperLab Gallery encourages visitors to become not only observers but active interpreters of these spaces, recognizing that history does not disappear. These places are not merely witnesses to the past, but living carriers of it.

The exhibition is a part of the official program of Budapest Photo Festival 2026.
